History of the Uxbridge Cosmos

The Uxbridge Cosmos is a free weekly community newspaper based in the town of Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada, which is in Durham Region about an hour northeast of Toronto. It is owned by Cosmos Media Inc.

We published our first issue Sept. 1, 2005, to offer an alternative source for information about our community. We are owned by almost 40 residents of Uxbridge,, and our most important role, we feel, is to give many different voices a chance to be heard. We have more than 30 regular contributors to the publication, including a photographer, an editorial cartoonist and a strip cartoonist.

We circulate to every residence and business within the Township of Uxbridge (as well as a few on the Georgina side of the border in Udora!), and consider the Township to be our editorial zone of coverage. We seldom cover events beyond the Township's borders, unless they directly affect or involve our readers.

Our newspaper takes its name from the Township's official flower, which is represented graphically on our cover. Our sub-title "Your Universe", of course, reflects another meaning of the word "cosmos", and yet another meaning for the Greek word "kosmos" is "the people". We take seriously our role as the true community voice for Uxbridge.

8,600 copies of the Cosmos are published each Thursday in the Township of Uxbridge: 8,100 delivered free by mail, 500 available in stores and boxes.
